Sacramento, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) today issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.
Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:
“Let’s be clear about what’s happening right now. The Supreme Court’s opinion on Roe v. Wade is part of a well-thought-out plan to undermine our democracy and retrograde rights, especially for the most vulnerable people in our country.
First, they went after voting rights. Then gun safety. Now, they are taking away access to safe abortions. This is a clear indication that the Court will go after other rights like LGBTQIA+ rights as well.
The agenda of the conservative activist Supreme Court is clearly interpreting the constitution for the benefit of the rightwing extremist elite, and to hurt BIPOC and low-income communities and groups. This agenda is also at the root of what has caused and exacerbated our climate crisis.
It’s going to be up to all of us to stand up and fight back against these human rights violations. The leadership of activists, advocates, and our elected officials will be essential. California can and must lead the way.”

While the Legislature’s budget includes $21 billion in climate and energy funding, it lacks details about how it will be allocated and whether it is one-time funding or funded over multiple years.

“The devastating tragedy yesterday leaves many of us wondering what to say that hasn’t already been said over and over again. But we can’t stay silent. Clean Air California launched a statewide advertising campaign this week highlighting the urgent need to fight climate change and its impacts by reducing vehicle emissions and curtailing wildfires. The coalition is sponsoring the Clean Cars and Clean Air Act, a November ballot initiative that would boost California’s transition to clean, zero-emission vehicles and increase wildfire prevention and response.
“It’s exciting to see an even bigger climate investment proposed today but Governor Newsom and lawmakers must double down on investments in clean air, energy, transportation, and other infrastructure. But more is needed. This is an existential threat and their job is to ensure victory in the fight. Saving California requires a budget with many unprecedented actions. We have the know-how and the resources. We just need leaders to unleash them by passing a Climate Courage Budget that invests at least $75 billion over five years.”
