Oakland, California – The following is a statement in response to the announcement from Toyota that the company supports the Trump administration’s efforts to rollback California’s emission standards.

Mary Creasman, CEO, California League of Conservation Voters:

“It’s infuriating that Toyota would come out in support of lower emission standards at a time when California is already dealing with terrible air pollution from wildfires around the state. Toyota is prioritizing profits over policies that will literally save lives. They are on the wrong side of history.

But this is how most corporations will act when faced with the reality of the climate crisis. They focus on profits and on what’s easiest. This was proven with oil companies’ knowledge of their role in the climate crisis decades ago, and has been proven again as recently as this last week by PG&E’s treatment of customers during our worsening wildfires.

We support Attorney General Becerra in his effort to fight these rollbacks in court.

We urge all our elected officials to lead the way with a comprehensive vision to tackle the climate crisis. Toyota’s decision is a deep betrayal of our reality and values in California, but we are hoping other companies step up and do the right thing.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
