Los Angeles, CA—Following the breaking news that President Obama will protect the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument, the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) released the following statement from CEO Sarah Rose:

“We thank President Obama, his administration, and California elected leaders including Congresswoman Judy Chu who had previously introduced legislation to preserve the San Gabriel Mountains. For over ten years, local residents in Los Angeles have worked to permanently protect the mountains, which make up over 70% of Los Angeles County’s open space. The San Gabriels are a shared resource for Angelenos and Californians of all backgrounds to enjoy the outdoors and hike, bike, fish, and stargaze. Thanks to this designation, the mountains and those unique experiences will be protected for future generations.”

The national League of Conservation Voters (LCV) released the following statement from President Gene Karpinski:

“Today’s announcement is great news for California. The San Gabriel Mountains provide one-third of Los Angeles County’s clean drinking water, as well as recreational opportunities for underserved communities and habitat for countless plants and wildlife. President Obama is listening to the local community and stepping in where Congress has failed to act by permanently protecting this special place for future generations.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
